Abstract

The purpose of this final report was to find out the meanings and the types of slang that is used by the actor or actress in the Shaun of the Dead movie produced by Universal Studios, 2004. The writer used descriptive qualitative method, where he described one by one word or phrase of slang from the movie. The writer had already selected fifty four slang words and phrases from the movie by using some theories in literature review that related to slang. After getting the data, he tabulated them to the table which contained columns and rows for slang words and phrases. Then, he analyzed the data through the perspective of slang meanings and types. It could be concluded that from the Shaun of the Dead movie, there were slang words and phrases such as: fuck off, shit, twat, motherfucker, ballsed up, and so on. From the analysis, the writer found the meanings in slang words or phrases by using some dictionaries of slang, the dialogues, the characters, and the setting of the movie. Then the writer found five types of slang based on Partridge’s theories and other relevant references, they are: society slang, slang in the public school and university, slang in the church, public house slang, and slang in publicity. Finally, the writer hoped that this research would be useful for future improvement, especially for students in English Department of Sriwijaya State Polytechnic who want to study about slang deeply.
