Abstract

Areca palm (Areca catechu) is known as a versatile plant has benefits in many park of life. However, the processing areca nut leaves stem is still limited as organic waste or firewood substitute for traditional cooking needs. Areca nut leaves stem contains cellulose that could potentially be used as a filler to produce of composite with Recycled Polypropylene (Rpp) matrix. Manufacture of composites in this research is done by process of hotpress by variying mass of fiber and matrix thus determine its effect on the characteristics of the physical and mechanical of the composites based on SNI 03-2105-2006 and JIS A 5908-2003. The optimum composition is obtained which in comparison of fiber and Rpp at 40: 60 with a water content of 8,23 %, density of 1,359 gr/cm3, thickness swelling 6,508 %, 17,56% waterabsorption, compressive strength 21,821 kg/cm2 and tensile strength 23,555 kg/cm2.
