Abstract
The aims of this research is to determine the potential for development of biodiesel from waste cooking oil using the raw material for making biodiesel that has been designed with varying concentrations of NaOH catalyst in order to obtain optimal process variables and the resulting products of biodiesel according to the standard as the first step to realize the national energy independence. The process of making biodiesel using trans-esterification stage with the ratio between the oil-methanol is 1: 4 (% v), the time used for 60 minutes at 400C temperature, stirring speed of 400 rpm and use a catalyst NaOH with a concentration of 0.4%, 0.6 %, 0.8%, 1.0% and 1.2% wt. In the process of making biodiesel through transesterification stage by using an equipment that has been designed, obtained optimum conditions are catalyst concentration of 0.8% with the acquisition of a yield of 42.54%, density of 0.8578 g/ml, 4.6559 cSt viscosity, flash point 185.70C, acid number 0.7854 mg-KOH/g,% moisture content of 1.0% and a calorific value 9833.0127 cal/g and has fulfilled the Indonesian National Standard in 2006. Keywords: catalyst, transesterification, optimal, biodiesel.
