Abstract

Steam Turbine Generator (STG) is the plant which uses steam to turn turbine that will eventually drivethe generator and produce electricity. In its process, STG has some primary units such as boiler, turbine, condensor, and generator. The first stage of energy conversion which does in STG is the convertion of primary energy to be heat (calor). This one is done in the furnace. The heat then wil be moved into water in the boiler to produce steam. Steam is conveyed to the steam turbine, in it, energy (enthalpy) is converted to be mechanical energy, and finally mechanical energy from steam turbine is then converted to be electricity by generator. Due to its important roles of boiler and steam turbine as primary units os Steam Turbine Generator, so that it’s important to do thermal analysis and running test of those two units, also to study the factors and variables which caused heat losses and obtain the opportunity to optimize work system, concerning in energy conservation. Parameters which studied are fuel, flue gas, teperature and pressure of steam, also rpm of turbine and generator. Based on those parameters, steam turine generator prototype has thermal efficiency 36,48%, which that efficiency still can be proved with minimize heat losses of radiation and convection on the surface of boiler. In the study of steam turbine, got some charateristics that fluence the work of steam turbine such as the decrease of turbine rpm, also the increase of turbine rpm which will cause the increase of tubine efficiency.
