Abstract

In general, silica gel made by melting quartz sand with sodium carbonate at a temperature of 13000C through the process and processing using the machine. However, this process is very wasteful of energy and cause environmental problems due to the exploitation of quartz sand continuously because it can not be updated. Therefore we need new sources of silica that is easy and can be updated. In this study, using the shell of palm oil and palm fiber as raw material for making silica gel. The use of palm kernel shells and palm fiber for the production of palm oil in Indonesia is very abundant, while the meat used only oil palm fruit and palm kernel shells and palm fiber only becomes waste, and from the literature stated that palm kernel shells and palm fiber has silica content very much, namely oil palm shells ± 59.1% and ± 61% fiber. This purpose research to determine the optimum composition ratio of the raw material in the manufacture of silica gel.The method used is the solid extraction liquid at a temperature of 1100C. Steps being taken, namely the extraction of silica by using Na2CO3 as the solvent, precipitated silica, silica purity continued analysis on silica gel and analysis of the absorption of moisture. The most optimum results there in the ratio of 50 grams of fiber and 50 grams of shells that the silica content in the raw materials 4.02%, 17.8 grams of silica gel products, silica gel silica content of 4.8% and the absorption of moisture content 26.2 %. The test results in the form of silica content in the silica gel and moisture absorption test had almost approach Standard JISS-0701
