Abstract

The mainstay of energy in this decade is oil and gas. One of the efforts that we can do is providing a source of alternative energy as a diesel fuel that is now being developed and called biodiesel. Biodiesel can be made with raw materials from the former palm cooking oil which is one of the raw materials that have a chance of making biodiesel, because these oils not only contain free fatty acids but also triglycerides. Biodiesel production process is done by using oil filtration, oil transesterification, and biodiesel washing. The amount of methyl ester formed is affected by the feed ratio of used cooking oil, methanol used and the operating conditions during the process. Manufacture of biodiesel from waste cooking oil as a transesterification takes place at temperatures of 40oC with variations of feed methanol of 1: 4 and using NaOH catalyst of 1%. The variation of the heating time is used for 30 minutes, 40 minutes, 50 minutes, 60 minutes, and 70 minutes. The result showed the highest volume of biodiesel product 409.3718 ml for variations in heating time of 70 minutes with the energy consumed of 1890 kJ.
