Abstract
Increased carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions from biomass combustion, including palm oil empty fruit bunches (TKKS), pose a serious challenge to climate change mitigation. This study aims to investigate the potential of calcined eggshells as an environmentally friendly adsorbent and to analyse the effect of adsorbent mass variation on CO₂ absorption efficiency during TKKS combustion. Eggshells were calcined at 900°C for 5 hours to form calcium oxide (CaO), then characterised using XRD and Iodine Number tests. XRD results showed a crystallinity level of 93.54% with a dominance of CaO compounds, while the Iodine Number test yielded the highest value of 330.018 mg/g at a mass of 2 grams, indicating good porosity and surface area. CO₂ adsorption testing with a gas flow system showed that increasing the adsorbent mass from 15 grams to 75 grams improved absorption efficiency from 56.73% to 71.26%, with performance differences influenced by the content of active minerals such as CaO and Ca(OH)₂. These findings confirm that eggshells have great potential as organic waste-based CO₂ adsorbents, offering an alternative solution in the form of simple and cost-effective carbon capture technology that supports organic waste management while reducing emissions from biomass combustion systems.
