Abstract

This final report discussed metaphorical expressions used in the political speeches delivered by Zohran Mamdani and Kamala Harris. This study was conducted because previous studies mainly focused on one speaker and did not compare the use of metaphor between different political figures. Using a descriptive qualitative method, this study aimed to identify the types of metaphorical expressions and examine the similarities and differences in their use. The unit of analysis was metaporical expressions found in the speeches. The data were taken from two political victory speeches available on YouTube and were analyzed using the Metaphor Identification Procedure (MIP). The identified expressions were then classified based on Conceptual Metaphor Theory proposed by Lakoff and Johnson (1980), namely structural, ontological, and orientational metaphors. The results showed that both speakers used the three types of metaphors in their speeches. Structural metaphor was the most dominant type, followed by ontological metaphor, while orientational metaphor appeared less frequently. The study also found several similarities and differences in the way Zohran Mamdani and Kamala Harris used metaphorical expressions to communicate political ideas and persuasive messages. Overall, this study contributed to discourse analysis by providing a better understanding of how metaphorical expressions are used in political communication.
