Abstract

The purpose of this research was to get activated carbon in accordance withIndonesian National Standard (SNI) 06-3730-1995. The research method used the carbonization process with it is temperature of 5500C for 2 hours and the activation process usingHNO3activator with the activation time5 hours. The Variations in this research is a variation of raw materials, such as palm coconut shell and palm coconut sludge, and the variations of theHNO3activators” Concentration as follow5, 10, 15, 20, 25%. The best activated carbon is carbon with the highest iodine absorption, which will be used to reduce the COD contents in Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME). The activated carbon which has the highest quality of iodine absorption is the activated carbon from palm coconut shells with its activatorconcentration HNO3 25% is equal to 786.8420 mg/L with its water content of0.44%, ash content of 2.02% , volatile matter content of 11.46%, and carbonmoored of 86.08% . As the test result of the effectiveness of activated carbonto reduce the contents of COD asin Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME)with activated carbon dosevariation 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 grams, it was found that a dose of 10 grams ofactivated carbon can reduce the contents of COD of 60.8%.
