Abstract
Activated carbon is made from carbon containing compounds. One of the materials used to make activated carbon is midrib of palm leaf. Midrib of palm leaf is one solid waste processing palm leaf seed which still less utilization. Midrib of Palm leaf included organic materials containing cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin which can be used as raw material for the manufacture of activated carbon because it is effectively adsorbent liquid waste. The purpose of this research is to utilizing activated carbon from midrib of palm leaf as an adsorbent of copper metals. The step of this research is drying, carbonization process, the process of downsizing, the activation process, the washing process until the pH is neutral, and the testing of activated carbon to absorbent Cu. In the activation process using activating agent sulfuric acid and phosphoric acid with various concentrations are 1 M; 1,5 M; 2 M; 2,5 M; and 3 M. By using carbonization temperature of 500 °C for 1 hour and 24 hours of activation time according to the standard SNI 06-3730-1995 obtained activated carbon in the best condition that activated carbon is activated with concentration of H3PO4 1 M are the moinsture content of 4.48%, the ash content 4.15%, the volatile matter content of 18.31%, the fixed carbon 73.06%, and the absorption of iodine is 1226.7965 mg/g. In the adsorption Copper metals, this activated carbon can reduce the concentration of copper metals from 10.022 ppm to 0.522 ppm with a contact time of 1 hour, so that the adsorption content of activated carbon to copper metals is 94.79%. Activated carbon from midrib of palm leaf is better than activated by an activator phosphoric acid compared by an activator sulfuric acid.
