Abstract
This final assignment (thesis) is a research about clay that comes from two quarry, Desa Tanjung Seni and Desa Tanjung Pering. This clay have a property that depends on water content, and the higher the water content, the lower the CBR value from the soil itself. A very striking difference is that when compaction is done on the field that the procedure of the compaction is not implemented so that it’s very uncommon to get the maximal soil strength from that compaction process. Compaction is done without noticing the water content when compacting and the number of passes in the compaction As for the process of clay testing which is conducted covers about soil physical properties (water content, soil density, atterberg limit, sieving, and hydrometer analysis), and the mechanical property of soil test that is compaction test through compaction energy that is varied with adding water content at certain condition and also CBR (California Bearing Ratio) that is a method that is used to determine layer thickness of pavement. From the result of this research it can be obtained that the percentage of escaped granules from sieve No. 200 for clay from Desa Tanjung Seni quarry and Desa Tanjung Pering quarry, according to AASHTO (American of state Highway and Transportation Officials Clasification) system classification, this two clays are categorized in soil classification group CH that is inorganic clay with high plasticity, fat clay. In compaction test, the energy variation that is used is 98 KJ/m3, 341 KJ/m3, 633 KJ/m3, 1526 KJ/m3, 2835 KJ/m3 . CBR unsoaked rate will have a decrease of carrying capacity with the increasing of excessive water content. Meanwhile, CBR soaked rate will be higher with the increase of water content up to optimum limit and maximum density. CBR soaked percentage rate will have a decrease if optimum water content is reached. The effect of water content on clay to CBR rate is the higher the water content the lower the CBR rate on the clay
