Abstract

Clay has low bearing capacity so that often cause damage of road. In civil engineering building CBR value and shear strength subgrade take effect in the planning either building or bridge.Before the subgrade is used, an author can do stabilization to increase soil bearing capacity. The soil which is a mixture between smooth soil and hard soil, shear strength caused by sticky( because of cohesion) and friction between grains of soil (because of angle). The purpose of this research is to know the influence of adding sand which is mixed by the clay with variation of 0%; 10%; 20%; 25%; and 30% to parameter test of CBR and shear strength. Based on AASHTO classification, soil classified into type of A-7-5 which is clay and based on USCS classification, soil classified into CH soil which is unorganic clay with high plasticity (fat clay). This soil has spesific gravity 2,50, liquid limit 51,89%, plastic limit 33,96% and plasticity index 17,93%. Soil has dry content weight (ɣd) 1,378 gr/cm3. With Wopt 20,04%. The influence of adding sand on clay will increase CBR value and shear strength. Where CBR value of soil in the original submersion is 3,00 and after extra sand in 30% variation get CBR value 6,14%. Value CBR of the original soil without submersion is 13,40 and after adding sand in the variation of 30% is 18,70%. Cohesion value and maximum shear angle in the variation of 30% is cohesion value 29,778 (kg/cm2) and shear angle 38,523ᶛ. Therefore if there is an adding sand, it can increase CBR value, the decreasing of cohesion value and the increasing of shear angle value.
