Abstract
Whey industry wastewater is characterized by high organic compounds and other pollution load. This wastewater is often dumped directly without processing it first, so that will be pollute the surrounding environment. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the operating parameters such as applied voltage (6 V, 9 V, and 12 V) and reaction time (30, 60, 90, 120, and 150 minutes) on fresh whey wastewater in the electrocoagulation method using aluminum electrodes. The optimum condition for this treatment is in 150 minutes and at 12 voltage. The optimum condition reduced: pH of 6.75, Fe content of 0.12 mg/L, TSS of 30 mg/L, COD of 48 mg/L, BOD5 17.4 mg/L, NH3-N of 0.37 mg/L, and the anode lose during the experiment is 1.368 gram, respectively. It has been shown that the removal efficiency of pH, Fe, TSS, COD, BOD5, and NH3-N increased with increasing the applied voltage and reaction time. Finally, the results demonstrated the technical feasibility of electrocoagulation method using aluminum electrodes as a reliable technique for removal of pollutan from whey wastewater.
