Abstract

The Effect of Particle Size and Solvent Ratio to Amount of Subbituminous Coal in Extraction Process to Produce Humic Acid Maryama Nancy Hidayat, 2016. 70 Pages, 7 Tables, 25 Pictures, 4 Attachment One alternative to optimize the utilization of subbituminus coal and hence to provide added value is to process it into humic acid extract. This coal is ineffective to be used as fuel because it has a low calorific value and high water content. This research was aimed to find out the condition of extraction for optimum yield in various particle size and solvent ratio. The extraction used various particle sizes (20; 60; 170; and 200 mesh) and coal to solvent ratio (1:2, 1:3, 1:4, 1:5, and 1:10). The research method was using a solution of 1.4 N KOH, extraction temperature of 750C and 2 hours extraction time with stirring speed of 700 rpm . The result of this extraction process then filtered and separated the humic acid from fulvic acid by adding HCl solution as a precipitation agent. The stage of subbituminus coal extraction are selection of raw materials, extraction process, gravitation precipitation, filtration, precipitation by adding the HCl solution, centrifugation and evaporation. Analysis of humic acid was conducted by means of gravimetric analysis (percent yield) and purity analysis. Commercial humic acid has a purity of between 75% - 95%. Humic acid extracted from coal was expected to have a purity of more than 75%. From the research, the humic acid obtained in optimum condition with a particle size of 170 mesh, and the ratio between coal and solvent 1: 2, yielded 3,525 grams with a purity of 95.9898%.
