Abstract

ASEAN Economic Community, that will be launched by the end of year 2015, has some purposes, among others are to encourage economic growth and welfare of the ASEAN member countries populations, through the creation of single market and unity production base that permits the free flow of goods, services, investment and labor. In order to become beneficiaries of the ASEAN Economic Community, it is necessary to optimize all the opportunities that available. South Sumatra has the potential to increase economic growth within the framework of the demographic bonus/dividend concept, as a result of demographic dynamics in the form of changes in the structure of the working age population. These opportunities need to be optimized in the context of the ASEAN Economic Community. Therefore the aim of this study was to determine whether the population growth in the southern Sumatra region can boost economic growth to face the challenges of the ASEAN Economic Community by 2015. In order to achieve the objectives of the research, the data used were GDP, and the population aged 15 years and above for the period of 2001 to 2012. The simple linear regression techniques were used to process the data. The result from this study found that there is a positive and significant relationship between population growth and economic growth.
