Abstract

Development of manufacturing technology of biodegradable plastics made from natural is one way to solve environmental problems. The biodegradable plastic is a natural polymer that is easily decomposed by microorganisms. In this research, the manufacture of biodegradable plastic using natural materials of cassava starch and plasticizer glycerin from used cooking oil by blending method. Starch is a natural polymer that can be used in the manufacture of biodegradable plastics because the source is abundant, renewable and easily degraded. This study aims to determine the optimum concentration of adding glycerin to obtain biodegradable plastic that have characteristics according to standards. glycerin concentration was varied from 10% -50%, thickness and water content increased from 0.16 mm to 0.24 mm and 15% to 18%; biodegrdabilitas plastic showed increased residual weight of 100% to 62.9% for the 50% concentration of glycerin. The results showed the use of glycerin affect the characteristics of biodegradable plastics such as thickness, water content and biodegradability biodegradable plastic.
