Abstract

UTILIZATION OF BAGASSE IN PRODUCING BIOETHANOL WITH STEAM EXPLOSION PRE-TREATMENT METHOD (Devi Rachmadena, 2014, 40 pages, 12 Tables, 10 Pictures, 4 Attachments) Almost all aquaculture commodities in the agricultural sector can produce biomass, as a source of material that can be converted into renewable energy. Bagasse is one of the biomass that is considered as waste of sugar mills, and has a fairly high lignocellulose content so that it can be used as raw material in the making of bioethanol. But, one of the barriers to the manufacture of bioethanol from lignocellulosic material is the presence of lignin which cover the structure of cellulose, so that the hydrolyzes enzyme can not reach and convert it into glucose. For that reason, in this research, the steam explosion pre-treatment was used to destroy and degrade lignin content, as well as increasing levels of cellulose and hemicellulose. The purpose of this study was to observe the effect of time on the pre-treatment process and the effect on the fermentation time towards the amount of ethanol produced. Variations of pre-treatment time used are 10, 15 and 20 minutes, while the time variations of fermentation are 4, 5 and 6 days. From the research, the number and the highest levels of ethanol produced from bioethanol that has undergone a process of pre-treatment for 15 minutes, and fermented for 6 days, ie a total of 18 mL with a concentration of 50.992%. While the number and the lowest levels of bioethanol produced that have undergone a process of pre-treatment for 20 minutes and fermented for 4 days, as many as 5 mL with levels of 40.278%.
