Abstract

DESIGN OF SEDIMENTATIONEQUIPMENT IN PALM OIL MILL EFFLUENT (POME)TREATMENT (Katrin Agnes Eyrani Sinaga, 2014, pages 47, tables 9, pictures 9, attachment 4) Industrial palm oil wastewater treatment or known as Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) at Palm Oil Industry is done with open ponds system. Whichconsistsofmorethan4ponds. However, technicallythe pondswere neveroperatedandmaintained properlyandwell.So that POME thatdischarged intothe riverhas notmet quality standardsthatcandamage the environment.The aim of this sedimentation equipment is to compare the sedimentation equipment in Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) treatment in Palm Oil Industry with equipment design. The processesthatoccur inthese equipmentsisthe process ofsedimentation, becausePOMEwhichleftsometimewill separate intotwolayers, namelywaterandsludge. Thisequipment designshapedlike aconeso that thesedimentation processis fasterandthe separation ofwaterandsludgecan bedone easily.Andas a comparison, the treatment of POME at Palm Oil Industry that use ponds system shaped like blockbuton a small scale. The volumeon bothof these equipments isas much as 36liters ofPOME.In order todeterminethe efficiency ofthese two equipments, theresidence timeofthe separationprocessof POMEiscalculatedevery1hour, 3hours, 6hours, 10hours, and24hoursforeachflow rateof 200L/min, 300L/min, and400L/min.Andfromthe data obtained, the efficiency ofthe equipment design Iis better thanequipment design II. If the Flow rate is faster, it will be sooner residence time, and the efficiency of the equipment will better in treating Palm Oil Mill Effuent (POME). From processingof POME treatmentwiththis sedimentation equipmentcan also produceuseful products. Sludgecanbe usedas anorganicliquid fertilizeralternativetooil palm plantationsreplacerelativelyexpensivechemicalfertilizers, andwatercanbe usedagaintoprocessthat requires. Thus, this sedimentationequipmentnot onlytreatPOME, butalsocanmake use of it. Key Word: POME, Efficiency, residence time, design equipment.
