Abstract

THE UTILIZATION OF KECIPIR SEEDS (Psophocarpus tetragonolobus L.) AS A NATURAL COAGULANT IN THE TREATMENT OF LIQUID WASTE FROM A TEMPE INDUSTRY (Febrianti Mawaddah, 2014, 49 pages, 9 tables, 20 pictures, 3 appendixes) Kecipir seeds (Psophocarpus tetragonolobus L.) contain tanin and protein so it can be used as coagulant. The purpose of this research to know the ability of kecipir seeds as natural coagulant, doses and optimum acceleration toward the decreasing of pH, turbidity, TSS, COD and BOD5 by using the method of coagulation–flocculation which is done by jar test, and analysis phase. The variable of research is kecipir seeds doses (400, 800, 1200, 1600, and 2000 mg/L liquid waste from tempe) and the stirring speed (20/5 rpm, 30/10 rpm, and 40/15 rpm). The result of the research showed, there was the increasing of pH from 4,92 to 4,98; the turbidity decrease from 214 NTU to 132 NTU, TSS tend to increased from 51,2 mg/L to 69,2 mg/L, COD and BOD5 does not decreasing, however increasing from the first result. For the coagulant doses and the maximum speed in strring shows the result which has not reach the maximum condition yet toward pH, turbidity,TSS,COD and BOD5. The ability of kecipir seeds on processing the liquid waste of tempe depend on the doses of coagulant given and the variation of the stirring speed and the research need to be improved more and more.
