Abstract

One of literature devices that is used to make a literature work becomes more unite and coherent is lexical cohesion. Lexical cohesion can be categorized into six types which are repetition, synonym, antonym, hyponym, meronym, and collocation. This research aims to investigate hozw lexical cohesive markers establish relationships across sentence boundaries to organize argumentative essays. The research method used is a mixed method that combines both qualitative and quantitative method. The sample of the research is selected with the purposive sampling technique from the population of 88 Sriwijaya State Polytechnique Students’ argumentative essays. Findings of the research shows that all of the lexical cohesion devices are used in the research sources with the least used device being meronym. These findings can be used as the base for further research regarding the improvement of students’ writing skill especially that which is related to the utilization of lexical cohesion devices.
