Abstract

This research analyzes the use of metaphors in the song lyrics of Justin Bieber’s My World album. The study aims to identify the types of metaphors and interpret their implicit meanings to provide a deeper understanding of how figurative language enriches song lyrics. Metaphors, as part of figurative language, play a significant role in expressing complex emotions and ideas in a relatable way. The album My World, released in 2009, contains various lyrics that portray themes of love, adolescence, and emotional growth, making it a suitable subject for metaphorical analysis. This study applies a mixed methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative techniques. The qualitative analysis focuses on identifying metaphorical expressions using Lakoff and Johnson’s (1980) conceptual metaphor theory, which classifies metaphors into structural, orientational, and ontological types. The quantitative aspect calculates the frequency and percentage of each type of metaphor to provide a statistical overview of their dominance. The data were collected by listening to the songs, transcribing the lyrics, and categorizing metaphorical expressions. The findings reveal 56 metaphorical expressions: 19 structural (33.9%), 16 orientational (28.6%), and 21 ontological metaphors (37.5%). Ontological metaphors appear most frequently, indicating their importance in describing emotions as tangible objects or experiences. These metaphors help listeners connect with the lyrics by transforming abstract feelings into vivid, relatable imagery. The results highlight the creative use of figurative language in music and its role in enhancing emotional engagement and artistic expression.
