Abstract
This research explores the types and functions of slang words found in the script of the animated film Inside Out 2, using Allan and Burridge’s (2006) theory as the primary framework. The study aims to identify the various slang expressions in the film and analyze their linguistic roles in context. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, the researcher collected data by watching the film, examining the official script, and categorizing slang words based on their types Fresh and Creative, Compounding, Imitative, and Clipping and their functions, such as to express impressions, form intimacy, or convey anger. The result show that imitative slang is the most dominant type used (53.44%), with words like “gonna,” “wanna,” and “gotta” frequently appearing in informal conversations. Meanwhile, the most common function of slang in the film is to intimate relaxed conversation (55.17%), reflecting the casual and personal communication style of the teenage characters. These results suggest that slang is used in the film not only to reflect natural speech but also to build character identity and emotional nuance. This research highlights the role of slang in enriching dialogue and provides valuable insights into language variation in modern animated films.
