Abstract

The potential of utilization coconut fiber waste to be alternative raw material of particle board production is very good for development, because sickle of coconut fiber contains high cellulose arround 43,44%, and from the composotion of coconuts can be produce coconut fiber arround 35%. The spread of coconut fiber in indonesia is very much, and with utilization of coconut fiber as alternative raw material can be reduce the using of wood significantly. Particle board on a research also use waste plastic polypropylene and polystyrene as adhesive glue, so tha can reduce negatif impact that cause from this waste. Manufacture of adhesive can do with composition percent weight variation between polypropylene and polystyrene such as100:0, 70:30, 50:50, 30:70, and 0:100, so can be known the effect to physical and mechanical characteristics of particle board in accordance with the standard of SNI 03-2105-2006 and JIS A 5908-2003. Generraly, the results obtained show that physical properties of water content, water absorption, density of particle board, and thickness swelling have reached the standard of SNI 03-2105-2006 and JIS A 5908-2003, while for mechanical properties of modulus of rupture hasn’t reached the standards. On this research, the best results of particle board at variation weight composition polystyrene : polypropylene(100:0 and 70:30), the result show that water content, water absorption, density of particle board, thickness swelling, and modulus of rupture of particle board are(7,8663 and 8,1536)%, (0,6505 and 0,6196) gr/cm3, (36,6680 and 40,0123)%, (5 and 6,66)%, (68,6736 and 72,7552)Kg/cm2for physical characteristics they have reached the standard, but for mechanical characteristics they haven’t reached the standard. We can known that increase of polypropylene can decrease the quality of the resulting particle board. Key word: Coconut Fiber, Adhesive Composition, Polystyrena, Polypropylene
