Abstract

Palm oil industry wastewater (palm oil mill effluent) is wastewater containing organic matter, has a low pH, about 4-5, and containing high level of biological oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD), about 28000mg/l and 48000mg/l. Therefore it is one of the potential sources of contamination when it directly discharged into river. As an alternative to the treatment, designed two tools, the first tool is beam-shaped and the second is pyramid-shaped. The tools will be compared to find more efficient by feed flow rate at 2 L/min, 4 L/min, 6 L/min and residence time of waste water at 1 hour, 3 hours, 6 hours, 12 hours, 24 hours in sedimentation process. Sedimentation process is an important parameter that start the palm oil industry wastewater treatment process, so the failure at the stage of sedimentation will cause unoptimal treatment. The Optimal flow rate of the third flow rate variation is 6 L / min, while the optimal residence time is at 24 hours. So, based on the flow rate and residence time of wastewater, design tool II is more efficient than the design tool I in wastewater treatment of palm oil industry in the process of sedimentation.
