Abstract

Corrosion known as corrosion is an event of damage or loss of quality of a metal that is caused by a reaction to the environment. Extract Purple Sweet Potato (Ipomoea batatas var. Ayumurasaki) is an organic material that can be used as an inhibitor to reduce the rate of corrosion of iron and copper in hydrochloric acid environment. The use of extracts of Purple Sweet Potato (Ipomoea batatas var. Ayumurasaki) is expected to be inhibitors that are safe, environmentally friendly and biodegrable and be able to reduce the use of inhibitors of the synthesis. Inhibitors of Extract Purple Sweet Potato (Ipomoea batatas var. Ayumurasaki) was selected as an organic inhibitor because it contains antioxidants that can inhibit the corrosion rate as anthocyanin. Weight loss method is used to test the effectiveness of extracts of Purple Sweet Potato (Ipomoea batatas var. Ayumurasaki) as a corrosion inhibitor in a metal plate measuring 4 cm x 1.5 cm x 0.17 cm and a copper plate measuring 4 cm x 2 cm x 0.0002 cm with a variation of inhibitor concentrations (0 ppm, 5000 ppm, 10,000 ppm, 15,000 ppm and 20,000 ppm) and long soaking time (48 hours, 96 hours, 144 hours, 196 hours and 240 hours. The results showed that the use of extracts Ubi Purple potato (Ipomoea batatas var. Ayumurasaki) is most effective when used in corrosive environments HCl 1% solution at a concentration of 20,000 ppm with a soaking time of 48 hours with an efficiency of 58.647% at 49.404% while the metal plate on the copper plate.
