Abstract

This study aimed to identify the types of figurative language used in the Barbie (2023) movie script and analyse their connotative meanings. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach. The data were collected from the Barbie (2023) movie script through documentation and observation techniques by reading the script and watching the movie to understand the context of each expression. The data were analysed using the theories of figurative language proposed by Perrine (2018) and Sala-Suszyńska (2016), while the meanings were interpreted using Leech’s theory of connotative meaning. The findings revealed 32 instances of figurative language consisting of hyperbole (11), metaphor (9), simile (8), and idiom (4), with hyperbole being the most dominant type. The analysis also showed that the figurative expressions conveyed various connotative meanings related to identity, self-worth, empowerment, gender inequality, and societal expectations. In conclusion, figurative language played an important role in conveying deeper meanings and supporting the themes presented in the Barbie (2023) movie script.
