Abstract

This research analyzes the figurative language used in the novella Animal Farm by George Orwell. The objectives of this research are to identify the types of figurative language used in the novella and to explain their meanings based on the context of the story. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method. The data were collected from the first three pages of each chapter in the novella through documentation techniques and analyzed using Perrine’s theory, as presented in Johnson and Arp (2017). The findings revealed 53 figurative language expressions consisting of seven types, namely personification, metaphor, simile, synecdoche, symbol, hyperbole, and irony. Hyperbole was found to be the most dominant type. The meanings of the figurative language were related to themes such as oppression, freedom, equality, power, propaganda, and hope. Through figurative language, Orwell conveys social and political criticism indirectly and effectively. This research is expected to help readers understand the use of figurative language in literary works and provide a reference for future studies on figurative language analysis.
