Abstract

This research aimed to identify the types of figurative language used in the song lyrics the album ‘The Life of a Showgirl’ by Taylor Swift’ and explain the meaning. This research applied a qualitative descriptive method, as it aimed to understand and interpret the meaning of figurative language in depth. The data were collected using the documentation technique from the song lyrics of Taylor Swift's album ‘The Life of a Showgirl’, which were obtained from the Genius website. The data were then analyzed by identifying and classifying the figurative language, interpreting the meanings based on the context of the lyrics and the theories applied in this research, and presenting the findings in tables. The results showed that the album contained 70 figurative language expressions, consisting of 17 metaphors, 17 hyperboles, 10 symbols, 8 personifications, 6 idioms, 4 paradoxes, 3 similes, 3 ironies, and 2 repetitions. Hyperbole and metaphor were the most frequently used types of figurative language. The figurative language mainly expressed themes of love, heartbreak, friendship, self-discovery, fame, and personal growth, while enhancing the emotional and artistic meaning of the lyrics. In addition, this research was expected to be useful for students, readers, and future research, especially in the field of linguistics and literary studies.Keywords: figurative language, qualitative descriptive, song lyrics, Taylor swift, the life of a showgirl
