Abstract

This study aims to identify the slang words used in the movie Chef (2014) and to analyze the meanings and functions of those slang words. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method using Chef (2014) as the primary data source. The data were collected through observation and documentation techniques, in which the researcher watched the movie repeatedly, read the movie transcript, identified and highlighted utterances containing slang expressions, and documented the identified slang words along with their contextual meanings and dialogue situations. The data were analyzed through systematic stages, including data reduction, data presentation, contextual interpretation, classification of communicative functions, and drawing conclusions. The meanings of the slang words were interpreted by considering the dialogue, speaker, listener, and conversational situation, while their communicative functions were classified into eight categories: informal communication; expressing intention and opinion; showing solidarity and familiarity; expressing approval and positive feelings; expressing surprise, shock, and disbelief; expressing anger and frustration; insulting others; and humor and camaraderie. The findings revealed that a total of 30 slang words were identified in the movie. The meanings of the slang words varied depending on the conversational context and included informal communication, friendship, emotional expression, opinion, surprise, anger, frustration, humor, and social relationships. The findings also showed that slang words served various communicative functions, with emotional expression and informal communication being the most dominant. The use of slang contributed to the authenticity of the dialogue and reflected the natural characteristics of everyday spoken English. Therefore, slang is not merely a form of non-standard vocabulary but also an important linguistic resource that enables speakers to express meanings, emotions, attitudes, and social relationships effectively.
