Abstract
Water hyacinth is an aquatic weed that is easy to grow and very quickly to develop so that it can be disrub the ecosystem of an aquatic. Every techniques has been done to reduce the negative effect of an aquatic and one of them is used for the manufacture of CMC (carboxymethyl cellulose). This is because the water hyacinth has a high cellulose content is about 60%. The process of CMC includes two phases: alkalization phase and carboxymethylation. In the cellulose alkalization stage reacted with NaOH (The concentration of NaOH are 25% w / v; 30% w / v and 35% w / v) into alkali cellulose. Alkali cellulose which has been formed then with sodium Monokloroasetat (NaMCA) on the stage of carboxymethylation which produces CMC. This study used a mixture of methanol - propanol as reaction medium with a various of compositions. The result of this research, the optimum condition of the ratio of methanol - propanol is 1: 8 with 25% the concentration of NaOH made CMC has the highest DS is about 0.71107 with the highest viscosity is about 6.3 cP and the highest purity that is equal to 76.62%.
