Abstract

Increasing energy needs cause diminishing energy resources. This encourages the search for renewable energy sources to anticipate scarcity. One of the new energy source is microalgae. Microalgae has been developed as a potential source of biodiesel to replace petroleum fuel derived from fossils.Of severalmicroalgaes species studies,One of the species of microalgae which is Chlorella vulgarisis known for containing high lipid content from 14 to 22 %. Biodiesel could be synthesized from vegetable oil through esterification and transesterification process. This research was done by two lipid extraction methods are soxhlet and maseration using n-hexane. After having obtained the oil microalgae, synthesis process is continued to performed biodiesel by esterification reaction with 2% H2SO4 catalyst, ratio between methanol and biomass 1:6 and temperature60 °C for 1 hour.Continued transesterification reaction with variations of ratio methanol and biomass are 1:4, 1:6, 1:8, 1:10 with 2% KOH catalyst and 60oC temperature. From esterification and transesterificationprocess is produced biodiesel with higestconvertion is 31,05% and the higest flash point is 156oCand acid value about 0,7 mg KOH/gram.Based of biodiesel product from this research, oleat methyl ester is the most dominant.
