Abstract

High population growth rate, leading to increased energy consumption. The utilization of fossil energy sources overload can result in the depletion of the availability of these energy sources. Briquette is one of the alternative energy sources to reduce dependence on fossil energy. The potential of biomass waste consists of plantation sector is sugarcane, oil palm, coconut, rubber, coffee and cocoa that can be processed into briquettes bioarang. In briquetting bioarang require adhesives as charcoal powder and unifying influence calorific value. In this research study as the utilization of oil palm shell charcoal briquettes. This study aims to obtain briquettes with quality that meet the standards so that they can as alternative fuels derived from fossil fuels. The method used in this study is an experimental method carbonization process at a temperature of 400 ° C for 2 hours. Briquette drying process at a temperature of 105 ° C for 1 hour. The object of this research is the oil palm shell briquettes with adhesive concentration of 6%, 8%, 10%, 12% and 14%. Charcoal briquettes are the best of all treatments at a concentration of 6%, ie adhesive with water content of 7.65%, ash content of 6.35%, 54.62% bound carbon content, volatile matter content of 31.38, the calorific value of 5617 cal / g, Shatter index of 1.20%, 0.83% density, burning time 25.20 minutes and the firing rate of 0.88 gr / min. Characteristics of briquettes made from palm shells using a particle size of 60 mesh with cassava starch adhesive has met the quality requirements SNI No 1/6235/2000 terms of water content, ash content and calorific value.
