Abstract

Activated carbon is an amorphous carbon produced from high-carbon material. One of them is midrib of palm oil seed which still less utilization. Activated carbon can be utilized as an adsorbent to heavy metals in the palm liquid waste. The purpose of this research is to utilizing activated carbon from midrib of palm oil to nickel metals. In this reseacrh, making of activated carbon from midrib of palm oil were prepared the carbonization process at 500oC for 2 hours and in the activation process using activating agent hydrochloric acid (HCl) with various concentrations are 0,1 M; 0,25 M; 0,5 M; 0,75M; and 1 M, and various of activation time 22 hour and 24 hour. The results of research showed activated carbon has best quality in accordance with the SNI 06-3730-1995 is activated carbon with concentration of HCl 0,1 M and activation time 22 hour are the moisture content 4,5429 %, the ash content 1,5630%, the volatile matter 6,9067%, the fixed carbon 86,9874% and the adsorption of iodine 890,3071 mg/g. In the adsorpstion nickel metals, this activated carbon can reduce the concentrations of nickel metals from 9,731 ppm to 1,158 ppm with a contact time of 1 hour, so that the adsorption capacity of activated carbon to nickel metals is 88, 0999%.
