Abstract

The added value of palm oil can be improved by converting to surfactant. Palm stearin methyl ester is a potential material as MES feedstock because Palm stearin is renewable, biodegradable and in Indonesia as the country with the largest palm oil producer in the world. Surfactant or surface-active agent is a compound having both polar and non-polar groups in the same molecule and forming head-tail configuration, thus able to reduce surface and interfacial tensions also to increase the stability of dispersed particle. Besides being used in industrial washing and cleaning, the surfactant is also used in the food industry, pharmaceuticals, paints, paper, textile, mining and petroleum industries. Conversion of Crude Palm Oil into MES begins with the process of esterification and transesterification to produce methyl ester. Methyl ester is sulfonated using sulfonating agents, neutralized using NaOH, and dried to remove water residual. The reaction time on the process of sulfonation with some kind of sulfonating agent is varied to know the influence of it on the quality of the resulting MES. Reaction time ranges that used are 1.5 hours and 3 hours, while the sulfonating agent used is NaHSO3, H2SO4, KHSO4. MES produced is tested ability to lower the surface tension of water. The concentration used was 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 and 1% by weight / volume of water. The test results produced MES product showed different ability in lowering the surface tension of water. MES with sulfonation time of 1.5 hours having the highest ability in lowering the surface of water until it reaches 19.29 dyne / cm at concentration of 1%
