Abstract

The environmental problems of plastic garbage disposal has become an important problem because it is difficult to be degraded. Some efforts that has been done to increase degradation time using natural polymer such as the starch that easy to degradation like taro tuber. However, biodegradable plastic from starch still a lot of disadvantages such as strong hydrophilic characters and worse mechanic characters, so it is needed to addother material such as starch corn husk, sorbitol, and chitosan. This research use experiment method with variant of chitosan (0gr;1gr;2gr) and variant of sorbitol volume (2ml;3ml;4ml) to know the effect of chitosan and sorbitol in making biodegradable plastic and to get optimum composition. In making biodegradable plastic,there were three stages, i.e making of starch, making of biodegradable plastics by adding chitosan and sorbitol, and sample testings (measurement of tensile strength, elongation, melting point, water resistant, and biodegradation test). The result of this research was the thin sheet and elastic of yellow biodegradable plastic that mechanic characters had been tested. The adding of chitosan with high concentrate could increase a value of tensile strength and water resistant, but it could reduce degradation time of plastic. From the result of this research, it shown that biodegradable plastic in the sample with 2 ml sorbitol and 2 gram chitosan was the best composition that had a value of tensile strength of 0,01471 Mpa, water resistance of 34.13% and degradation time for 30 days.
