Abstract

In general the laundry business does not have a sewage treatment plant. Waste of laundry activities directly throw to the drainage, therefore needed a waste treatment process so as not to pollute the surrounding environment. The technology has used for the laundry wastewater were electrocoagulation process where the waste of treatment technology using an electrochemical process by anode will release coagulant active form of metal ion (Al or Fe) into the solution, while at the cathode electrolysis reaction occurs in the form of the release of hydrogen gas to form a floc which is able to bind contaminants and particles in the effluent. The purpose of this research was characterization laundry before and after electrocoagulation process and determine the effectiveness of the electrocoagulation process with a variety of processing time and voltage. This research carried out in batch using aluminum as an electrode with dimensions 15cm x 15cm and the distance between the electrodes is 1cm. These researched was conducted by varying the voltage of 6, 9 and 12 volts and processing time for 30, 60, 90, 120 and 150 minutes. The optimum coditions for this treatment are at a voltage of 12 volts and processing time of 150 minutes. The decrease in the effectiveness of TSS is 42%, BOD5 84,35%, COD 78,18%, PO4 15,58% and detergent concentration 54,29%. The results also obtained current efficiency namely 76,61%. These processing results have fulfilled the quality standards of environment.
