Abstract

USING REEDS AS MATERIALS FOR BIOETHANOL PRODUCTION BY FERMENTATION (Jaka Oktasanova, 2014, 55 page, 9 tabel, 12 picture, 4 attachment) This study aims to utilize reeds as a basic material for bioethanol production, determines the selection of pretreatment method (soaking with acid or without soaking with acid), determine the concentration of sulfuric acid in the process of bioethanol hydrolysis so as to obtain the optimal amount and concentration, and compare the bioethanol produced with standard bioethanol/ethanol. In this research, two types of pretreatment process by soaking the acid and acid without soaking where each pretreatment process is done by treating them with sulfuric acid of 0.1 M, 0.15 M, and 0.2 M of 1000 mL in the hydrolysis stage with a mass of 100 grams of reeds. Hydrolysis is carried out at a temperature of 80 ° C for 1 hour, while the fermentation process is carried out for 7 days, followed by purification with 3 hours distillation stage at a temperature of 78-800C. Analysis performed is determining the bias index using a refractometer, density using a pycnometer, the pH value, bioethanol concentration level using ethanol-water Standard Curve calculation and chromatography gas, and testing of the test flame. From this study sample with a concentration of 0.15 M H2SO4 pretreatment by treatment with acid soaking using chromatography gas testing produces the best quality of bioethanol product with 34 ml volume, bioethanol concentration of 55.12%, whereas the analysis using the water-ethanol standard curve calculation produce only 53.10% bioethanol level.
