Abstract
Preparation of Activated Carbon from Shell Palm Oil with Activators HCl, NaOH and NaCl (Kurnia Oktari. 2014. 41 Page. 7 Table. 7 Figure. 3 Appendix) Activated carbon can be manufactured from organic and inorganic materials containing high carbon content. From a number of studies that have been conducted, research is usually activated carbon from coconut shell, bagasse, sawdust, and so on. One of the materials that can be used for the manufacture of activated carbon, one of which is waste palm shells. Preparation of activated carbon will increase the economic value of oil palm shell. Activated carbon is a carbon compound that is activated by soaking in chemicals (activation) or by means of steam flow into the material, so it becomes open porous material that serves as a gas or liquid absorbent. Research aims to improve the quality test of the quality of the activated carbon tailored Indonesian National Standard (SNI No. 06 - 3730 - 1995). In this study, activated carbon prepared by carbonization process at a temperature of 500oC for 2 hours with a size of 200 mesh carbon, and varying the activator used in the form of HCl, NaOH, and NaCl and increasing concentrations of activator used were 0.3 M, 0.4 M, and 0.5 M in activation process for 24 hours. It is shown that the use of activated carbon in the activator concentration of 0.5 M HCl has the best results of the activated carbon using NaOH and NaCl activator, wherein the activator concentration the greater the greater the absorptive capacity of the activated carbon. The results of the analysis of activated carbon is 7.11% moisture, 3.88% ash content, volatile matter content of 31.75%, 65.62% bonded carbon content, and the absorption of iodine was 824.76 mg/g.
