Abstract

DETERMINATION OF PARTICLE SIZE AND ACTIVATED CARBON’S CONTACT TIME FOR DECREASING COD (CHEMICAL OXYGEN DEMAND) IN DOMESTIC WASTEWATER CHEMICAL ENGINEERING LABORATORY OF POLYTTECHNIC SRIWIJAYA. (Siti Suryanti 2014, 49 Pages, 7 tables, 5 images, 4 attachment) Waste is anything that resulting from the activities of living beings both human, animal and plant. Based on the form of waste is usually divided into wastewater, solid waste and waste gas. Waste generated dar activity of living beings is usually the most effluent is not used anymore. Activities of living beings also produce hazardous waste that can pollute the environment or living beings around him. This study aims to treat waste generated from lab activities in the Laboratory of Chemical Engineering Polytechnic of Sriwijaya. To lower the parameters that can be sewage contaminants polluting the environment, the parameters of this study is the main goal of processing is reduced levels of pH, TSS and COD. The processing is done in three stages, namely pH equalization process, Process Coagulation and Adsorption Process. The process is at the core of this processing is a process in which adsorption process using activated carbon adsorbent from coconut shell, further research is done variations of particle size and contact time. Variations in particle size is the size of 20 mesh, 60 mesh and 170 mesh, and the contact time of the activated carbon of 1 minute, 2 minutes, 3 minutes, 4 minutes, 5 minutes, 6 minutes and 7 minutes. The results of the analysis of the acquisition of any variation of pH on particle size and contact time are still very acidic 3. TSS of analysis has decreased in each particle size. In the COD reduction in size of 170 mesh activated carbon is still lacking on the national standard parameters is above 6000 mg / L. Keywords: Adsorption, Coagulation, pH, TSS, COD
