Abstract

This final report analyses the types of noun phrases found in Chapter Six of the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. The study aims to identify and classify noun phrases based on their structural patterns by using the theories proposed by Greenbaum & Nelson (2002) and other supporting linguists. The method used in this research is qualitative descriptive with literature study and documentation techniques for data collection. The data were analyzed by identifying, classifying, and interpreting each noun phrase found in the selected chapter. The findings reveal a total of 160 noun phrases, categorized into how many types: noun phrases with determiners (101 times), noun phrases with determiners and pre-modifiers (33), noun phrases with determiners and post modifiers (15), noun phrases with only pre- modifiers (6), noun phrases with only post-modifiers (3), noun phrases with both pre- and post-modifiers (1), and noun phrases with determiners, pre-modifiers, and post-modifiers (1). The dominant type was noun phrases with determiners, indicating that simple structures are commonly used in narrative prose to ensure clarity. This research contributes to grammar learning by providing authentic literary examples and offers a reference for students in understanding and analyzed the structure of noun phrases in context.
