Abstract
Utilization of solid waste from cuttlefish, namely cuttlefish shells are not optimal and currently still limited its use as feed for birds and turtles because it contains calcium carbonate, sodium chloride, calcium phosphate and magnesium salts, with calcium carbonate content of about 85 %. Due to the high content of calcium carbonate in the cuttlefish shells, it can be used as raw material for the manufacture of PCC (Pecipitated Calcium Carbonate). Today powder PCC (Pecipitated Calcium Carbonate) has been utilized in various fields, such as health, food, and industrial. In the industrial field, CaCO3 powder used in the manufacture of paper, plastic, coats, ink, paint and polymer pipes. CaCO3 powder with special qualities developed as a mixture of cosmetic, bioactive materials, to nutritional supplements. PCC can be synthesized by using the methods of solvay, carbonation and caustic method. In this study, the manufacture of PCC used HNO3 as a solvent of cuttlefish shells powder to produce a reactant calcium nitrate Ca(NO3)2 and then reacted with Na2CO3, so that it will produce PCC (Precipitated Calcium Carbonate). The fixed variables in this study is the mass of cuttlefish shells powder. This study used two variables change, named calcination temperature (800; 850; 900; 950; 1000 °C) and addition of HNO3 concentration (1.00; 1.25; 1.50; 1.75; 2.00 M). The optimum condition from this experiment is on the calcination sample at 1000 °C with the addition of concentration nitric acid (HNO3) 2.00 M resulted in yield of 99.78 % with a purity of 99.96 %.
