Abstract
This final report studies about the types of phrases found in the novel The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne seen from the formation of the phrase. The purpose of this research is to find out the types of phrases can be found in the novel and which type is mostly found. In this research, the writer used descriptive qualitative method. This method was used in order to collect, classify, and describe the types of phrases found in the novel The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas. The technique for collecting the data is documentation. The technique for analyzing the data were done through three steps: Identifying, Classifying, and Making percentage. The data got after reading the novel are 9 types of phrase, they are: 4334 verb phrases, 2135 prepositional phrases, 1355 noun phrases, 457 infinitive phrases, 429 participle phrases, 323 adjective phrases, 80 absolute phrases, 35 gerund phrases, and 19 adverb phrases. In conclusion, there are 9 types of phrases found in the novel The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas, and the type that mostly found in the novel is verb phrase. The next researchers are suggested to conduct a test for English Department students by giving them the same novel that the researchers use and let them elicit the phrases in the novel and classify the type of the phrases. It is intended that the next researchers will get the data of English Department students’ knowledge about phrases and the data will be beneficial for the grammar lecturers in teaching about phrases.
