Abstract

Pulp and chemical compounds of cellulose derivatives is the raw material for making paper. Pulp fiber separation is the result of fibrous raw materials (wood and non-wood) through the process of making either mechanically, semikimia, and chemistry. Search for alternative raw materials are needed to reduce dependence on wood pulp. One of the materials that can be used as an alternative raw material for making pulp is corn stalks, corn stalks is a waste because it contains cellulose which is quite high at 45% and not yet widely used. This research was carried out by the chemical method using NaOH as soda solution cookers This study aimed to determine the effect of NaOH concentration and temperature of the cooking yield, cellulose content and lignin content. Determination of residual lignin content in the pulp is done by determining kappa number. The variables used in this study is the concentration of NaOH 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, and cooking temperature 65oC, 80oC, 95oC. The results obtained at the optimum concentration of NaOH 15% and temperature 80o C with a yield of 52.536%, 55.053% cellulose content and kappa number of 22.432.
