Abstract

Activated Carbon from Charcoal Mixturing of Oil Palm Shell and Rubber Seed Shell with Activator HCl, NaOH and NaCl (Rosdelima, 2014, 34 pages, 10 Tables, 9 pictures, 3 attachment) This topic presents the results of research manufacture of activated carbon from charcoal mixture of oil palm shell and rubber seed shell by chemical activation method. Activated carbon is widely used for color removal, relief, deodorizing, and purifying agents at industry of food. The purpose of this research to look for an appropriate alternative utilization of wastes into useful activated carbon with economical added values. In this research, activated carbon is made with size of 200 mesh. Preparation of activated carbon made by carbonization and activation processes. In the authoring process carried out at a temperature carbonization 500°C for 2 hours, while the activation process is done by using activators HCl, NaOH and NaCl concentrations of 0.3 M, 0.4 M and 0.5 M about 24 hours. Activated carbon absorption is getting stronger with the increase of the concentration of activators, because the higher concentration of the activator will cause more and more impurities both organic and inorganic substances dissolved and separated from the surface of the activated carbon pores, thus causing an increase in the activated carbon absorption (Fuadi et al., 2008). Activated carbon got the maximum result in concentration 0.5 M activator by NaOH, with condition of water rate 12.81%, Ash rate 5.75%, volatile Matter 34.65%, Fixed Carbon 55.57% and Iodine’s absorbing 846.07 mg/gr.
