This research used the quantitative method. The data was analyzed based on Hyland’s model (1990). The analyzed consist Thesis, Argument, and Conclusion with 13 moves. The population was sixth-semester students in the English Department of Sriwijaya Polytechnic in 2019. There were 30 students written the argumentative essays. The results revealed that most students lack knowledge and experience in making argumentative essay texts so that the rhetorical patterns or the way students write essays do not fulfill all the moves contained in Hyland's model.
