Abstract

Nitrogen fertilizer is a fertilizer that has the most important substance for plant growth. Although the substance is important, nitrogen easily get lost through leaching in nitrate, evaporating into the air in ammonia gas, and transforming into other forms that plant can not utilize. The absorption of nitrogen by plants will occur after urea is decomposed into ammonium. The purpose of this study was to determine the optimum conditions of the ammonium (NH4+) formation which is produced by mixing up urea and humic acid. The method is reacting urea and humic acid with variation of humic acid concentration (2, 4, 6, and 8%) and temperature (18, 28, 38, and 48oC). Then analyze the ammonium content formed according to the variation. The optimum condition of the ammonium formation occurs at the concentration of 4% humic acid with mixing temperature of 28oC which yields ammonium content of 33.53%.
