Abstract

Retirement planning is an important aspect of individual financial management to ensure financial stability in the future. However, in Malaysia, low financial literacy and gender differences in financial behavior pose significant challenges in retirement preparation, especially among young adults. This study aims to examine the influence of financial literacy and gender on retirement planning among young adults in Malaysia. Using a quantitative descriptive approach, data was obtained through questionnaires distributed to 100 students at Management and Science University Malaysia. The data were analyzed using classical assumption test and multiple linear regression. The results of the analysis show that financial literacy and gender significantly influence retirement planning. The F test yielded an F value of 49.381 with a significance value of 0.000, indicating that the overall regression model is significant. In addition, the t-test shows that financial literacy (t = 9.938; p = 0.000) and gender (t = 2.149; p = 0.034) have a significant effect on retirement planning. The coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.505 indicates that 50.5% of the variability in retirement planning can be explained by financial literacy and gender. These findings highlight the importance of financial literacy education as a foundation for improving retirement readiness and reducing the gender gap in retirement planning. The results of this study recommend the development of inclusive financial education programs and policies that support gender equality to improve financial well-being in retirement.
