Abstract

This final report examines the use of figurative language in the lyrics of Petals to Thorns, an album by the artist d4vd. d4vd often known for his poetic and emotional songwriting. He uses figurative expressions to explore themes such as love, heartbreak, and personal struggle. The aim of this research is to identify the types of figurative language present in the lyrics and interpret their meanings. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method, with the lyrics from all nine songs in the album serving as the primary data. The analysis is based on Leech’s (2013) framework, which divides figurative language into eight types: metaphor, simile, personification, hyperbole, metonymy, irony, litotes, and oxymoron. The study found 65 instances of figurative language, metaphor is being the most dominant with 27 instances and the last dominant is oxymoron with 1 instances. These figurative elements add depth and emotion to the lyrics, helping listeners connect more deeply with the songs. This research shows how figurative language enhances the beauty and meaning of modern song lyrics and highlights its important role in musical storytelling.
