Abstract

This study explores the types and meanings of figurative language found in the lyrics of Bruno Mars’ song Talking to the Moon. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, the research aims to identify, classify, and interpret various figurative expressions embedded in the lyrics. The analysis reveals a total of 51 figurative language instances categorized into metaphor, symbolism, personification, imagery, hyperbole, and simile. Among these, metaphor and symbolism are the most dominant, with each type appearing fifteen times. Personification and imagery also frequently occur, enriching the emotional layers of the song. The figurative expressions in Talking to the Moon highlight the songwriter’s attempt to communicate profound feelings of longing, isolation, and hope. By assigning human attributes to the moon and stars and using symbolic elements, Bruno Mars transforms simple lyrical lines into deeper metaphors for unreciprocated love and emotional struggle. This research shows how figurative language in song lyrics serves not only as an artistic device but also as a medium to convey complex human emotions in an indirect yet powerful way. The findings emphasize the importance of understanding figurative language in music, especially for non-native English speakers, as it broadens their appreciation of lyrical meaning. The study suggests that pop songs like Bruno Mars’ work can be rich with literary devices that deserve further linguistic and semantic analysis. It is expected that this research will be a useful reference for students, researchers, and music enthusiasts interested in studying figurative language in contemporary song lyrics.
