Abstract

This study aims to analyze the argumentative structures used in climate change speeches and to examine how these structures function as persuasive strategies in spoken discourse. The data consist of selected climate change speeches delivered by AntónioGuterres, Simon Stiell, and Greta Thunberg between 2023 and 2025, obtained from official transcripts published on the United Nations and UNFCCC websites. The analysis is based on Toulmin’s Model of Argumentation, focusing on claim, data (grounds), and warrant as the main components of argumentative structure. The findings are expected to reveal that argumentative structures play a crucial role in shaping persuasive strategies in climate change discourse. The speakers construct their arguments by presenting clear claims supported by relevant evidence and logical reasoning, which enhances the credibility and effectiveness of their messages. Therefore, this study contributes to English discourse analysis by providing insight into how argumentative structures function as persuasive strategies in contemporary climate change speeches Keywords: argumentative structure, climate change speeches, discourse analysis, persuasion, toulmin mode
